In the TUCCO News
(Atlanta, Georgia) -- Drivers from 10 companies throughout the state recently gathered in Tucker, GA, to compete for "best of the best" honors.

Driving can be very difficult under the best of circumstances — congested traffic, demanding schedules and tight spaces in which to maneuver.

But if you are responsible for delivering a perishable product that must reach its destination in 90 minutes, in a vehicle that weighs more than 60,000 pounds (not to mention a very high center of gravity plus severe limitations on speed, braking and turning), driving becomes something that demands even more.

Then add to that one more detail — the fact that your heavy cargo is constantly spinning around.

If that's your definition of driving, that that makes you one of about 3,000 Georgia concrete truck drivers working to deliver what's been called the world's most versatile and essential building material.

Finding Georgia's Best Concrete Truck Driver
So who is the best concrete truck driver in the state?
To answer that question, the top 1 percent of Georgia's concrete delivery professionals put their skills to the test on a recent Sunday morning as part of the Georgia Concrete Mixer Driver Competition, sponsored by the Georgia Concrete & Products Association.

At stake was the right to be called the best concrete truck driver in the state.

Twenty-seven professional drivers from 10 companies took part in the event. Contestants went through a rigorous four-hour competition, which was held in Tucker, GA, an Atlanta suburb.

In addition to the truck driver competitors, more than 300 spectators, judges, family members, sponsors, and other industry professionals attended to cheer for their favorites, enjoy a barbecue lunch provided on site, and celebrate the best drivers in Georgia. Spectators were able to view the competition from the security and comfort of a parking deck overlooking the course.

Tough Competition Elements
The competition consisted of three parts: a written exam, a comprehensive pre-trip vehicle inspection and the driving test. Competitors drove their choice of front or rear discharge concrete trucks provided by the McNeilus Co. or Schwing Mixer Trucks.

Thirty percent of each driver's score was based on a written test that covered areas ranging from proper handling and transport of concrete to admixtures and environmental concerns. The pre-trip check, worth 20 percent of the total score, was equally comprehensive and focused on how the driver checks the truck before making each delivery.

The remaining 50 percent was determined by each driver's performance on a demanding driving course and was the major component of the competition. It presented 10 separate challenges including tight turns, forward and backwards serpentine courses, precision movements, and other skills. Drivers were scored and also timed.
And The Winners Are ...

At the conclusion of the competition, results were scored, and all competitors were given certificates and a truck replica as finalists in the competition. The top five finishers were then called forward to be awarded cash prizes and a trophy.

Excitement built as the five top finishers were named in ascending order. Finally, the First Place trophy was awarded to Thurmond "JJ" Clark of Tucker Concrete Company (TUCCO). Clark, who finished 126 points ahead of the next closest finisher, drives a front discharge mixer and has been with TUCCO his entire career.

Kenny Ainsworth of Lafarge (last year's top finisher) placed second in this year's competition. Other top finishers were Wendell Jennings of Thomas Concrete; Vernon Westbury of Vulcan Materials, Florida Rock Division; and Jeff Buice of Thomas Concrete.

Georgia's top two finishers, Thurmond Clark and Kenny Ainsworth, will take their skills to Nashville, TN, in October to compete in the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) Mixer Driver Championship. At the national championship there will be top competitors from 40 states vying for the top driver honors. The NRMCA event is very similar to the Georgia Championship in that it includes a Driving Challenge course, a pre-trip inspection and a written examination.
